About Us

B:Read (short for “Bruneians Read” and pronounced “Bee Read”!) is a group that aims to foster a stronger reading culture in Brunei, by engaging Bruneians with activities pertaining to reading. We are particularly interested in social events and online communities.

Our main committee was founded in October 2011 and we have held book meets and our ever-popular bookswaps. Find out more about the team behind B:Read!

We often commit personal time and contributions to our activities and initiatives. Every event sees our volunteers, both regular and occasional, generously helping out. We’d like to thank everyone for their support over the years!

In 2016, we will be calling the collective maker space our home (or our b:readquarters)! Our 4th free library is there and we’ll be holding events there as well.

B:Read holds a public bookswap once or twice a year. The event aims to expose both readers and non-readers to a wider array of books in Brunei – owned by fellow readers – by a system of swapping, or exchange (barter trade). B:Read recognises the limitation of books available in Brunei’s shops and libraries. Thus, by holding bookswaps, we hope to encourage people to either start reading or continue to read, especially with the mixed collection of books in our bookswap pool.

Originally starting out as “Brunei Bookswap” on Facebook Groups, the growth in membership eventually led book-swapping to be one of the primary focus of B:Read.  The group’s name was changed to “B:Read Bookswap” on 5 March 2012 after we completing a mini-bookswap at the 2012 Brunei Book Fair.
